What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a degenerative disorder of the cornea that cause it to thin and change into
a more conical shape than its normal
spherical one. Keratoconus can cause
significant visual distortion and visual loss.
If afflicting both eyes, the deterioration
in vision can limit one’s ability to drive and read. |

If afflicting both eyes, the deterioration in vision can limit one’s ability to drive and read.
Some forms of keratoconus are mild and picked up incidentally on eye imaging taken as part of laser eye assessments. Many progress in the teenage years and 20’s with increased corneal degeneration, vision loss and corneal scarring. If left untreated the only option in advanced keratoconus is corneal transplantation.
Treatment Options
More recently a treatment called corneal cross linking (CXL) has been proven to halt the progression of keratoconus in x% of cases. If Keratoconus is progressing or affecting your vision you may be a candidate for this treatment. To determine this serial Pentacam images are required to identify progression and response to treatment.
Contact lenses are important in the management of keratoconus both before and after the treatment of keratoconus.
Our journey with Dr Kathryn McCreery started in 2022 when Teddi was just 4 years old.
We had travelled to various clinics over the UK seeking help with her incredibly complicated divergent exotropia squint but had no luck. It was our 4 hour journey down to Southern Ireland that changed everything.
I remember the relief and excitement that my husband and I felt instantly when we first met Dr Kathryn and her highly knowledgeable team at Blackrock clinic knowing that this was just the start of Teddi’s incredible eye journey.
Teddi was reviewed regularly at Blackrock clinic monitoring her eyesight and squint ahead of any surgeries with very in depth testing. We received continuous support via telephone and email and with each appointment we felt so well informed and involved in her care. The whole team are fantastic with children and Teddi loves heading to Blackrock to see everyone for her reviews.
Fast forward to 2026 Teddi is now 7 and has had 2 eye surgeries resulting in her eyes now being completely aligned straight. This is something at a stage we didn’t think would ever be possible for her and we will never be able to put into words how grateful we are for what Dr Kathryn McCreery and her team have done for Teddi. It has been completely life changing for her!

I recently had a Lasek procedure with Ms. Kathryn McCreery in December 2016 and the whole experience was very positive . I had a speedy appointment booked at short notice, I went in had my procedure which took no longer than 5 minutes per eye and it all felt as easy as if going for a dental check up. Instantly after the procedure I could see much clearer. A week passed and I had clearer vision than through my contact lenses, i just thought how simple the procedure was and how much relief and benefit it gave.
